What if I don’t fit in anywhere?
You’re not the only one, even if it feels that way at 2 a.m. In 2023 the U.S. Surgeon General said about half of American adults report feeling lonely. Not fitting is often a sign you’re between places, not that something’s wrong with you. Belonging usually starts small: one person, one table, one standing invitation.
1 · MindWhat people believe, and how they know
In 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory called Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation. It said about half of U.S. adults report feeling lonely, with some of the highest rates among young adults. It also said a lack of social connection can raise the risk of early death about as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.
People end up between places in many ways. Kids of immigrants can feel too American at home and too foreign at school. People who leave a church can lose their whole social world in a month. People who convert, come out, move, divorce or grieve can find their old circle doesn’t fit and the new one hasn’t formed yet.
What each tradition or community says
We're Christians, so we list what Christians believe first. Every other section is checked by someone from that faith or community.
“God sets the lonely in families.” (Psalm 68:6, WEB). Jesus himself was rejected in his hometown (Luke 4:24-30) and kept company with people who didn’t fit anywhere else.
Many describe living between two worlds as both a loss and a gift. Over time, some find their people are others who live in between too.
Many say the hardest part wasn’t changing beliefs. It was losing the potluck, the friends and the weekly place to be.
2 · HeartWhat it feels like
Not fitting in can feel like standing in a doorway with the cold air on your back. You can see the warm room. You’re not sure you’re allowed in, or if you even want the room.
That feeling is real, and it’s heavy. It doesn’t mean you’re unlovable. It may mean you’ve outgrown one place and haven’t found the next. That’s a lonely hallway, but it is a hallway, not a dead end.
Plenty of people who seem to fit in are just good at nodding. You may be lonelier than they are, or you may simply be more honest.Neighbor Radio
3 · HandsHow to be a good neighbor
Start with one. One person you can text. One place you go every week, a library, a gym, a choir, a volunteer shift, a mosque or church or meetup. Show up enough times to become familiar. Belonging often grows from being recognized, then being missed.
And if it’s heavier than lonely, if you’re thinking about not being here, call or text 988. It’s free, it’s 24/7, and someone will answer.

From Jesus' story of the Good Samaritan, about the stranger who stopped to help. We call it the Samaritan Test.
- Did they see? Or look right past?
- Did they stop? Even when it was inconvenient?
- Did it cost them? Time, money, comfort, reputation?
- Did they treat the person like a person? Not like a label?
Try it on: the person in your circle who seems to be standing in the doorway. Did you see them? Did you wave them in?
Quick questions
Is it normal to feel like I don’t belong anywhere?
Very common. About half of U.S. adults report loneliness. It’s painful, and it’s also a feeling that can change.
How do I find community after leaving church?
Look for regular, repeated gatherings: volunteer groups, classes, clubs, or a different faith community if you want one. Repetition builds friendship.
What if it’s more than loneliness?
