Can you be a good person without religion?

Recording soon: I'm an atheist. Am I still your neighbor?, with a pastor and an atheist neighbor

Yes. People without religion can be kind, honest and generous, and many are. You can see it on any street. The Bible agrees. It says people outside the faith can do what is right by nature (Romans 2:14-15). In Jesus’ best-known story about kindness, the hero is an outsider. Christians add one belief: being good isn’t how anyone earns God’s love. That comes as a gift.

1 · MindWhat people believe, and how they know

Goodness is known by experience and testimony (what other people tell us): we see it in people of every belief. Christians add revelation (what they believe God has shown), saying all goodness comes from God, whether or not a person names him.

What each tradition or community says

We're Christians, so we list what Christians believe first. Every other section is checked by someone from that faith or community.

Christianity

Paul writes that Gentiles (people who aren’t Jewish) without the law can do by nature what the law requires (Romans 2:14-15). In Matthew 25:31-40, people are surprised to learn that helping the hungry and the stranger was helping Jesus.

Judaism

Jewish tradition teaches that righteous people of all nations have a share in the world to come (Tosefta Sanhedrin 13:2, an early collection of Jewish teaching).

Islam

The Qur’an says people of earlier scriptures who believe in God and do good will have their reward (Qur’an 2:62, summarized). Interpretations vary on who is included.

Humanism

Secular (non-religious) humanists ground ethics in human dignity and reason. Many lead charities and care work.

2 · HeartWhat it feels like

If you’re not religious and you’ve been told you can’t be good, that hurts. If you are religious and you’ve been told good atheists prove religion is pointless, that stings too. Both conversations usually go better on a porch than on the internet.

Goodness is visible. You know it when someone shows up with a casserole. Jesus seemed more interested in who showed up than in who had the right label.

I know atheists who’d give you their kidney and church folks who won’t give you their parking space. Jesus noticed that too. He told stories about it.Neighbor Radio

3 · HandsHow to be a good neighbor

When asked who to imitate, Jesus pointed to a Samaritan, someone his audience considered religiously wrong, and said “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). He also criticized religious experts who knew the rules and walked past the hurting man.

This weekThank one person of a different belief, or none, for a specific kindness they did.

Plain wordsWhat do these words mean?

Testimony
A personal story of faith: what someone believes and why. In court, it means a witness’s account.
Revelation
Something people believe God has shown or told them. Also the last book of the Bible.
Qur’an
The holy book of Islam. Muslims believe God revealed it to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.
Secular
Not religious, or not tied to any religion. A secular government doesn’t take a side on faith.
Atheist
Someone who doesn’t believe in God or gods.
Grace
A gift you didn’t earn. Christians use it for God’s love and forgiveness, given freely, not as a reward.

Four questions to take with you

From Jesus' story of the Good Samaritan, about the stranger who stopped to help. We call it the Samaritan Test.

  1. Did they see? Or look right past?
  2. Did they stop? Even when it was inconvenient?
  3. Did it cost them? Time, money, comfort, reputation?
  4. Did they treat the person like a person? Not like a label?

Try it on: the kindest person you know who doesn’t share your beliefs. Have you ever told them so?

Quick questions

Do atheists have morals?

Yes. Moral behavior is common among people of every belief and none.

If you can be good without religion, why believe?

For Christians, faith isn’t mainly about being good. It’s about trusting God’s love and grace, which then shapes how you love others.
